yesterday i went to the dentist. i've always been good about going. well, there was a brief period of time when i wasn't .
as a child my mom always took my sister and me for our check ups. we even went with her to her appointments. the day her jaw got stuck open terrified me, but i still faithfully went to the dentist every six months. then in high school, a dentist who really wanted to be a banker, but his dad wanted him to be a dentist (he actually told my "banker" mom this) filled what was supposed to be a simple cavity. i now have an expensive root canal and crown to thank him for. the only one in my mouth. he also performed a procedure on my mom and her jaw became the size of an apple. she looked like one of the chipmunks. we later found out she could have died from the infection. so, this is when i stopped going to the dentist.
a few years later i found an awesome dentist dr. monica anderson, but i think she enjoyed being a writer more than a dentist (noticing a trend here?) and she retired a couple of years ago. and to her credit, she is a really great writer (and dentist). but i digress. i was her patient for six uneventful years. then, i found a new dentist who was ok until he allowed his 70-something year old father to get back in the business and give me a faulty filling.
now that i'm married and have moved to cowtown, i decided it was as good a time as any to transition to yet another dentist. and he seems to be ok so far. he started off really honest. "melyssa, i don't think you have tmj. i think you have arthritis in your jaw." oh ok. why did i think i had tmj? two words - bad chiropractor, but i'll have to save that story for another day. in the meantime i'll just keep practicing being a 26-62 year old with arthritis in her jaw!
